  3. pursue his life-long ambition to discover a
  4. historical basis for Homer's Iliad. In 1871
  5. he began excavating at Hissarlik, Turkey, a
  6. site which yielded the ruins of nine
  7. consecutive cities and was indeed the site of
  8. Troy. His later excavations were at Mycenae
  9. 1874-76, where he discovered the ruins of the
  10. Mycenaean civilization.
